MIT graduate from Hilo

MIT graduate from Hilo

Noa N.S. Flaherty graduated June 5 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a double major, bachelor’s of science degrees in mechanical engineering and Sloan’s School of Business Management in addition to a minor in mathematics.

He received MIT’s Presidential Scholarship, a full four-year tuition waiver. His overall GPA is 4.8 out of 5.0.

Flaherty is the son of Suzanne (Suzy) Sanxter and John P. Flaherty.

Flaherty graduated from Hilo High School in 2011 and attended Hilo Intermediate and Ha‘aheo Elementary schools, where he excelled in robotics.

After he returns from a three-week nepenthes (carnivorous pitcher plant) discovery expedition, Flaherty will continue residing in Boston where he is employed full time with Onshape, a 3-D computer-aided design software company, as its community development manager.

Buddhist society honors students

The Hilo Buddhist Friendship Society of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin recently named 2015 graduates Shawn Mori of Hilo High School and Keisha Sato of Waiakea High School as recipients of $1,000 scholarships.

An awards dinner was hosted June 10 at Sangha Hall.

Mori is the daughter of Don and Sandra Mori. She will attend the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Sato is the daughter of Wendell and Gayle Sato. She will attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Cole completes medical studies

Rio Cole, D.O. chief resident from John Burns School of Medicine graduated June 13.

Cole attended A.T. Still University of Osteopathic Medicine, University of Hawaii at Hilo, and Waikea High, Intermediate and Elementary schools.

Cole will be a hospitalist for Castle Medical Center on Oahu.

Gonzaga grad hails from Hilo

Christa Lum of Hilo earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration at Gonzaga University in Washington state during commencement May 11 at the Spokane Veterans’ Memorial Arena.

Degree earned from Scranton

BenjaminBlue Smith of Captain Cook earned a master of science degree with a major in human resources from the University of Scranton (Pa.) at its graduate commencement May 30.

Class of 2015 graduates of the Jesuit university included two recipients of prestigious Fulbright scholarships for the 2015-2016 academic year.
